Register / CPR

When you have registered with the Civil Registration System, you will be issued a CPR number. This number consists of ten digits. The first six digits are your date of birth (day, month, year) and the last four digits provide a unique identification number for all citizens in Denmark. The final four numbers also indicate your sex, ending in even numbers for women and odd numbers for men.

The CPR number is used in connection with registration and personal identification, e.g. in connection with salary payment, housing purchases, bank transactions, insurance policies and many other situations.

Be aware that it is a personal number and it can be misused.

Your CPR number is yours for the rest of your life and the information about you should be kept up to date. You must inform the authorities if you change your address or if you leave the country (holidays excepted). The limit for notification is 5 days.

Factsheet Leaving Denmark - things to remember

There are a number of conditions for your registration, you are only allowed to get a CPR number if: 

• You stay at least 3 months 
• You have a residence permit (Nordic citizens excepted). 
• You have a place to live

You must fill in and sign an application form with information about your full name, date of birth, citizenship, marital status etc.

Remember to bring

• Valid registration certificate or residence permit 
• Passport/ID card with picture 
• Nordic CPR number if entry from a Nordic country 
• A proof of your address in Copenhagen (rental contract, letter from your landlord e.g.) 
• Marriage certificate, if you are married 
• Children's birth certificates, if you have children 
• The blue EU health insurance card if you are a student

Important information about your address

• It must be a valid address, meaning that you have the right to register your address in the CPR system. 
• You are supposed to state the address where you are actually staying and it should be a permanent one, a minimum length of 1 month is expected. 
• It is important to note, that not all housing companies accept subletting or rental of rooms and the number of persons in a flat is also restricted. 
• This will be checked and your registration will not be accepted, if there are any obstacles. 
• A registration can be cancelled, if the address proves to be illegal.

 

Correct address

Another important thing in order to make a registration is, that you write the exact address e.g. which floor you are living on and which side or door number.
In Denmark certain terms are used such as the ground floor (in most other countries this is seen as the first floor)

Translations

Ground floor	=	st. / stuen
First, second, third floor etc.	=	1., 2., 3. and so on
To the right	=	th. / Til højre
To the left	=	tv. / Til venstre
In the middle	=	mf. / Midt for
In the basement	=	kld. / Kælder

 

Put your name on the mailbox

If you do not put your name on the mail box you have to mention who you are living with in order to receive your health insurance card, which will be sent to you 2 weeks after registration.
